Most guitarists can play. They have calluses, muscle memory, a feel for the instrument. What a lot of them can't do is open a piece of sheet music and read it.

If that's you, you're not behind. You're in the majority. And the gap between "plays well" and "reads notation" is smaller than it probably looks from where you're standing.

Disclosure: I built StaffReader, the note-reading app mentioned at the end of this post. I'm a guitar player myself and came to notation the hard way. The app is iOS-only, treble clef only, and won't teach you to read chord symbols, rhythm, or tab — I'll be specific about what it does and doesn't cover.

Why guitarists learn tab instead — and what it costs you

Tab works. For a self-taught guitarist, it's practical: six lines for six strings, numbers for frets, and you can learn almost any song. The system is fast and it's everywhere.

What it doesn't tell you is the pitch. A "5" on the A string and a "5" on the D string are different notes — tab tells you where to put your finger, not what sound you're making. You learn the fretboard by geography, which is fine for learning songs, but it means you never build a connection between what you're playing and the universal language that music uses to write those pitches down.

Standard notation does the opposite: it tells you the pitch directly and nothing about where to find it on the guitar. That's the trade-off. Neither system alone is complete.

For reading sheet music for guitarists — melody lines, transcriptions, printed music — notation is what's used. Tab is not standard notation. If you want to read music the way a classically trained musician reads it, you need the staff.

The first thing to know about guitar notation (it's a quirk)

Guitar is a transposing instrument. Music written for guitar uses treble clef, but the notes sound one octave lower than written.

What that means in practice: when a piece of guitar music shows a C on the first ledger line below the treble staff — the note every musician calls "middle C" — the guitar actually sounds the C an octave below that. This is a convention every guitarist hits eventually. It's not a mistake in the music; it's just how guitar notation works. The written pitch and the sounding pitch differ by an octave, and most beginner guitar music just assumes you'll learn this as you go.

For the purposes of learning to read the staff, you can mostly set this aside. The visual skill — seeing a note on the page and knowing what line or space it occupies — is the same regardless of transposition. You're learning the map. The octave question is a detail you'll resolve when you sit down with actual guitar music.

Where your open strings live on the staff

Standard tuning gives you six open strings, from lowest to highest: E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4.

That last one — the high E string, E4 — sits in the bottom space of the treble staff. Every other open string is below the staff. The open B string (B3) is below middle C, which itself sits on the first ledger line below the staff.

Most of your open strings live below the bottom line of the treble staff. That is normal for guitar, and it is why beginner guitar notation leans on ledger lines early. Do not let the ledger lines spook you — they are just the staff continuing past its printed lines, counting the same alphabet up and down.

You already think in landmarks and intervals

Here's something guitarists rarely hear: you already use the same cognitive approach that skilled music readers use. You just use it on the fretboard instead of the staff.

Think about how you navigate the guitar. You know the 5th fret A-string is the same pitch as the open D string. You know octave shapes — the same note two strings over and two frets up. You know the dot inlays at frets 3, 5, 7, 9, and 12 are anchors that tell you where you are without counting. You don't locate every note by counting up from the open string — you jump to a known position and work from there.

That's landmark navigation. A fixed reference point, then intervals from it.

Reading notation works exactly the same way. Fluent readers don't identify every note by counting from the bottom of the staff. They recognize a few visually distinctive anchor notes automatically, then read everything else by interval from whichever anchor is nearest.

The coordinate system is different — a staff instead of a fretboard — but the underlying skill is one you've already developed. You're not starting from zero. You're translating something you already do into a new medium.

What the landmark method looks like on the treble staff

The treble clef is drawn the way it is for a reason. The curling symbol wraps around the second line from the bottom — that line is G4. The symbol was designed to mark the G line; it's a pointer built into the notation itself.

That's your first anchor: G4, second line from the bottom. You don't need a mnemonic. You don't need to count. The clef is literally pointing at it.

The second anchor is C5, the third space from the bottom. Central, easy to see once G4 is fixed in your mind.

Once those two notes are automatic — meaning you see them and know them before you consciously search — every other note becomes a short interval away. A4 is one step above G4. B4 is one step below C5. F4 is one step below G4. You stop counting from the bottom and start reading by distance from points you know.

This is the landmark method, and it is worth understanding before you pick up any app or drill any flashcards. The method is the thing. Any tool that supports it is secondary.

Why most "learn to read music" attempts stall

Probably you've tried before. Maybe you worked through a theory book, or downloaded a note-reading app, or watched a YouTube lesson. You learned the names of the lines and spaces. You could, with time, identify any note. And then when you tried to actually read music in context, it didn't work.

What went wrong is almost always the same thing: knowing a note and recognizing it instantly are different skills. The mnemonic "Every Good Boy Does Fine" can tell you that the bottom line is E4 — eventually, by running the chain. But fluent reading requires the note to register before you consciously search. That gap between "can identify" and "instant recognition" is where most attempts die.

Where to go from here

The practical order, if you're starting from scratch:

  1. Understand the landmark method before you drill anything — the landmark method post covers the full sequence.
  2. Get G4 automatic. Not "I can identify it." Automatic.
  3. Add C5. Keep G4 intact.
  4. Expand outward, one note at a time, depth before breadth.
  5. When you have six to eight notes automatic, pick up a simple melody — one voice, no rhythm complexity — and start reading it in real music.

The fretboard took you years to learn. The staff will take months, not weeks, if you approach it honestly. But the foundation of the skill — navigating by landmarks and intervals — is one you already have.

You already know the neck by feel. Reading sheet music for guitarists is just teaching your eyes to point at what your hands already understand. Start with one anchor, one position, five minutes a day — and let the fretboard do the rest.
